I always fail miserably when I try to explain this to my mother. Once or twice a year she likes to bring up how I "wasted" the money she spent on my math degree.

I try to tell her that at its core, Math is all about problem solving, and most jobs require problem solving. Therefore, it was money well spent.

She's not buying it. But, it makes sense to me.
